Sermon Summary: Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent means “coming”. During the Advent season, we celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world nearly 2000 years ago. Today, we will focus on the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:1-17. A Jewish genealogy was important because it showed the purity of one’s lineage. When we examine the family tree of Jesus, we see that it is not so pure. It is tainted with Gentile blood and notorious sinners. What can we learn from the genealogy of Jesus? The lineage of Jesus provides three truths for us…

  1. Jesus came int this world fully God and fully human.
  2. Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
  3. Jesus came into this world to break down barriers.
